A New Era for High-speed Rail in China

[2014-11-06] The launch of the first Beijing–Tianjin high-speed rail in 2008 marked A new era for high-speed rail in China. With 10 years’ planning and development, China’s high-speed rail system has become the largest and the fastest in the world. The high-speed rail network of China follows the grid system which has four rail corridors from north to south and another four from east to west, crisscrossing cities and allowing citizens to travel within the country more conveniently. A number of high-speed rail lines are expected to be launched by the end of 2014 and 2015, connecting cities between Shanghai and Kunming, Guizhou and Guangzhou, Lanzhou and Urumqi and, Datong and Xian; also connecting people across the country.

To be launched by the end of 2014

Hangzhou – Changsha section of Shanghai – Kunming high-speed rail line

Chengdu – Mianyang – Leishan high-speed rail

Lanzhou – Xinjiang Second high-speed rail (Connecting Lanzhou, Qinghai and Urumqi)

Guiyang – Guangzhou high-speed rail

To be launched in 2015

Yuanping – Taiyuan section of Datong – Xian high-speed rail line

Harbin – Qiqihar high-speed rail

Hainan eastern ring high-speed rail (Connecting Haikou and Sanya)

Guiyang – Changsha section of Shanghai-Kunming high-speed rail line
