Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed rail launches at the end of this month

[4-12-2012]  According to the Railway Bureau, Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed rail route is set to open by the end of this month.  Covering the region of Bohai Economic Rim, Central Plain, Wuhan, Pearl River Delta and their neighbouring cities, the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed rail route significantly shortens the travelling time between the north and the south of China from over 20 hours to around 8 hours.  A further extension to Hong Kong via Shenzhen is projected to open in 2015, offering passengers a new option to travel between the mainland China and Hong Kong.

The official ticket prices will not be announced until the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed rail starts operation. Based on the current standard fare of the Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed rail, the first-class fare of the upcoming rail will be up to ¥1,522 (RMB); while the second-class fare will be around ¥957 (RMB). Despite the relatively high fare, Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed rail has gained much expectation from the public as it is more convenient to reach the in-town railway station instead of the airport which is usually far from the city center.  Besides, the high-speed rail is more comfortable than current regular rail and its schedule is relatively less influenced by unforeseen weather.
