Yunnan, a mysterious province with diverse ethnic cultures in China, played a vital role in developing trading and cultural exchange with the Southeast Asia on the “Ancient Southwest Silk Road” two thousand years ago.    The remains of the vanished kingdoms such as the Dian, Nanzhao, Dali and Jinglong kingdoms have made the history of Yunnan more intriguing.   There are 26 ethnic minorities in Yunnan Province, such as Bai, Tibetan, Miao, Lisu and Naxi.  The diverse lifestyle, languages, religions and customs of these ethnic groups integrate to form colourful cultures in Yunnan.
Yunnan is endowed with picturesque landscapes and beautiful natural scenery.  The Shangri-la (Zhongdian), located in the northwest of Yunnan Province, is the legendary utopian land depicted by James Hilton's acclaimed novel Lost Horizon.
